Could Putting Something In Your Dishwasher Cause A Plumbing Emergency?

If you are lucky enough to have a dishwasher at your home, you know that it can be a godsend—especially after cooking dinner for the family. Of course, not everything is suitable for washing in the machine, and you may find that you are damaging more than your dishwasher with the items you put in the appliance. Want to avoid calling a plumber? Avoid putting these things inside your dishwasher.

Plastic Containers

Certain plastic containers are great for washing in a dishwasher, but you should not put anything that is very thin and has been reused after storing food. Think butter tubs, for instance. These containers can melt as a result of the intense heat put off by the washer, and the melted debris can actually create a clog at the bottom of the washer. These are just much better for hand washing so that they do not damage your pipes with clogs that require a professional plumber to clear.

Wooden Items

Many utensils and cutting boards are made out of wood, but these items are not the best choice for your dishwasher. Wood easily dries out and warps, eventually leading to cracks that ruin your favorite wooden items. If your wooden items crack or fall apart while in the dishwasher, the splintered pieces could cause a clog at the bottom.

Delicate Glass Items

If you have items that are made of glass and are very delicate, they could break in the machine very easily. If this happens, you will need to clear every bit of glass out of the machine before you use it. If glass gets caught in the machine, you may need a plumber to help.

Paper Labels

You may be tempted to toss glass jars with sticky labels into your dishwasher, but that is not a great idea. Labels fall off the jars when the heat gets to them, meaning that the paper can create clogs at the bottom of your dishwasher. Of course, you can put glass jars in your dishwasher so long as you completely remove the sticky label ahead of time.

Items With Caked On Debris

Some people think that you can put dirty dishes caked in filth in a dishwasher, but the truth is that dishwashers are not generally equipped to handle large amounts of food. It is wise to rinse off your dishes first at the very least.

Dishwashers do a fantastic job cleaning many materials, but it is important that you pay close attention to what you expect it to do. Call for plumbing services if you believe that any of these items have led to clogs and other problems with your dishwasher.
